WMMCA “Building Futures Together”
The West Michigan Minority Contractors Association (WMMCA) is a non-profit organization of members that work toward the common good of promoting the professional interest of one another. The concern of WMMCA is with any and all aspects of the minority and women owned business community as they relate to the development and expansion throughout West Michigan. WMMCA creates opportunities for “Building Futures Together!”
The West Michigan Minority Contractors (WMMCA) was founded in 1982 by a small minority owned construction group of contractors in the Grand Rapids area.
Since then the WMMCA has provided a network of contractors and businesses who share their knowledge and experience with one another. The efforts of WMMCA provide a central location for the West Michigan construction to tap into the minority and woman owned construction industry.
WMMCA and its municipality partners have been working together for many years under construction policies that mandate participation, interaction and labor collaboration from minority and women owned businesses. WMMCA creates opportunity for equity and diversity in the construction industry, and connects big corporations to quality, prequalified and certified minority and woman owned businesses. Building Futures Together!
WMMCA is continuing to reach milestones in diversity for our members.
During the late 1900’s and early 2000’s, the WMMCA worked with the City of Grand Rapids to formulate new construction participation policies that met the strict standards set by the Supreme Court in Corson vs. City of Richmond.
The year 2001 bought about a major expansion of focus for the WMMCA as we began reaching out to the private sector. A great deal of attention has been paid to securing negotiated work where MWBE participation is not a requirement. This action of the WMMCA has lead to establishing a voice for our membership regarding civic and political matters. Our representatives attend various cities, county and state commission meetings to lobby on the behalf of all WMMCA members.
Companies that benefit from membership with the WMMCA have been able network and utilize MBE/WBE companies to secure diversity on projects that include restaurants, real estate firms, manufacturing, legal firms, and medical facilities, educational facilities, local and state governments.
